Doug Hughes is a good friend and an excellent speaker. This talk looks at the experiences in Revolutionary America that were the DNA of our country and culture throughout our history. Doug describes our Colonial ancestors' fight for self-governance during the time of British rule over our country and how it has shaped American values and beliefs about the role of Government versus the rights of citizens.
October 6, 2022 - Looking for America: Essays on Our Country and Culture - Frank A Lancione
I gave this talk on October 6th, 2021 as the first Civil Discourse South Club talk in the 2021-2022 season. Diane and I had just returned from the three month, 10,000 mile RV trip around America described in the Trip USA 21 tabs of this website. My goal was to share the nearly spiritual experience of encountering the vast geological wonders of the American West and how it changes your sense of what is important and your place in the world.
Wait! What Happened to Live Zoom Simulcasting of talks?
The End of An Era
We didn't know it at the time, but June 2022 marked the end of an era - the end of our Civil Discourse South sessions being delivered live in person and simultaneously broadcast over Zoom. Since May of 2020, Lou Sasmor, Ian Walmsley and I have been broadcasting Civil Discourse Central and Civil Discourse South sessions live over Zoom.
Putting on a good presentation and discussion every month is a demanding task as it is. Adding a live Zoom broadcast on top of that with polling, breakouts, and live questions from both an in-person and online audience is very labor intensive. It took Lou, Ian, and me to pull it off every session for the over two years we have been doing it.
Lou stopped these so called "hybrid" sessions for the Civil Discourse Central club shortly after it returned to full time in person sessions earlier this year. However, the three of us kept them going for Civil Discourse South until just now. Unfortunately, these sessions have simply become too technically complex and labor intensive to continue.
What's changed is that with more and more people attending in person, we are running into technical and facilitation issues. There are now more people attending in the room than there are online. That greatly complicates the real time broadcast sound situation. Over the past few sessions, we have been fighting feedback, echoing, background crowd noise and other serious sound issues. A professional broadcast operation has dedicated equipment and technical personnel to handle these issues. We do not.
Likewise, it has become harder and harder to integrate remote users into the face-to-face discussions going on in the room. We are having to artificially cut off interesting exchanges and arbitrarily break up the flow of the dialogue between the in the room participants and the speakers who are standing right in front of them talking with them face to face.
To everyone who has followed Civil Discourse South live broadcasts over the past two plus years - THANK YOU! Lou, Ian and I greatly appreciated your interest, participation and support. We often remark that without Zoom, both of our clubs would probably have ended as a result of the lock downs. You, us, we all helped each other make it through the pandemic together.
Life is continuously changing. Our role is to know when to hang on and when to evolve and move on. The time is here for all of us to advance to the next phase and the new challenges it will bring. Thanks for making this journey with us!
